His career is almost as marked by success as by controversy. A look back at the history of this French house with an unusual destiny.
The story of Yves Saint-Laurent, a figure of world artistic excellence
Yves Saint-Laurent is born in 1936 in Oran, Algeria. He spent all his youth in this place before arriving in Paris to join the school of the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. There, he met Michel de Brunhoff, director of Vogue France. The latter introduced him to Christian Dior who decided to hire him as an assistant. Gifted with extraordinary talent, Yves Saint-Laurent instantly made a name for himself in the fashion world. So much so that when Christian Dior died in 1957, Yves Saint-Laurent took over the artistic direction of the brand. He presented his first collection in January 1958 and was a huge success. However, he was called to do his military service and was therefore hospitalized for depression. As a result, he was dismissed from the Dior house in 1960. He thus decided, barely a year later, in July 1961, to join forces with Pierre Bergé to found his own fashion house. Thanks to the financial support of billionaire J. Mack Robinson, Yves Saint-Laurent presented his first collection five months later. This is how its meteoric rise began. Yves Saint-Laurent displayed immense daring, surprising audiences with his strict sense of the cut, his simple color scheme and his androgynous fashion. Likewise, he is at the origin of the feminine tuxedo, the Saharan or the trouser suit for women.
The audacity of Yves Saint-Laurent in perfumery
Moreover , in 1971, Yves Saint-Laurent presented his first perfume named Rive Gauche. The same year, he decided to go even further and pose nude for the advertisement of his perfume Homme. This is considered to be Yves Saint-Laurent's first provocation. However, it will not be the last! In addition, the Opium fragrance aroused much controversy and went so far as to be banned in certain countries due to its illicit connotation. Never mind, it at least had the merit of making people talk about it and contributed to making it a phenomenal publicity, making this juice one of the most famous perfumes on the planet. Thus, over the course of the controversies, the Yves Saint-Laurent house has established itself on the international scene, being adored by the general public but also by the biggest stars. The notoriety of Yves Saint-Laurent was such that in 1983, a retrospective of his life was retraced at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, a great first for a creator still alive.
Today , Yves Saint-Laurent has been developing fragrances for more than 50 years, both appreciated by men and women. Many of its juices have become essential references endowed with frankness, daring, avant-garde and exceptional know-how.
